Background

I’ve spent the last 10 years of my professional life running Pennswoods.net, an ISP in Pennsylvania, as a partner. For those years I ran the engineering department and drove product development as the Vice President of Network Operations.

Simple Systems – I spent those years learning that websites, business, and IT are made way too complicated. After struggling to keep my head above water for years, I began finding simpler ways of doing business. It started with using a CLEC, Coretel, to provide dial up phone lines. Next, I moved ALL four physical Network Operations Centers and 20 + servers to Amazon’s EC2 cloud. I ended with new web applications being built on Google App Engine in weeks instead of months. The last app I built for Pennswoods.net is http://advertise.pennswoods.net; It displays and keeps statistics for nearly one million views each day!

Simple business – In that same time frame I took my team of engineers from putting out daily fires with six+ months backlog of work, to an work environment where small projects are completed weekly with measurable results and very few social nor network outages.
